Detectives from the Uganda Police Force are hunting for assailants who killed the former Deputy Governor of Yei River State in South Sudan, Brigadier Gen. Abraham Wani Yoane Bondo.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga says preliminary investigations indicate that the murderers spoke Arabic and some languages commonly used in South Sudan.
Gen. Bondo was stabbed to death at his residence in Nansana Wakiso District on Tuesday last week and was pronounced dead at International Hospital Kampala-IHK two days later.
Officers from Nansana police station who visited his residence established that the assailants raided Gen. Bondo’s residence around 10:00 pm on Tuesday night.
Eyewitnesses say they heard assailants speaking fluent Arabic and other languages commonly used in South Sudan.
After stabbing their victim, the assailants searched his home and made off with the deceased’s television set and mobile phone. However, Police records show that Brig. Bondo had reported two previous botched attempts on his life in South Sudan, which prompted him to run into self-exile in Uganda.
As a refugee in 2016, the deceased declared that he had switched to the side of the South Sudan Vice President Riek Machar and accused President Salva Kiir’s government of extrajudicial killings and human rights abuses.
Brig Bondo claimed that he started receiving threats in the same year after a group of unidentified South Sudanese visited his residence in Nansana in Wakiso district looking for him in vain.
“In 2018, he claimed that assassins had been sent to kill him at Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement Camp and this was the matter that was taken over by the Office of the Prime Minister in Uganda and United Nations agencies,” Enanga said. He visited his family in Nansana in March and decided to stay.
