Residents of Kamuwunga landing site in Lukaya town council are in mourning following death by drowning of two fishermen in Lake Victoria today Monday.
Ziad Nsereko and William Zziwa drowned while allegedly trying to escape from UPDF soldiers who raided the landing site in an illegal fishing operation.
According to residents, scared fishermen dived into the water to evade the soldiers only for two of them to drown in the process.
Their bodies have been retrieved by their colleagues and police who conveyed them to the health centre for post mortem before handing them to their respective family members.
Fishermen have accused government of failure to reopen the landing sites in time as it had been promised. Adding that the fishermen have been financially pressed especially due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
The Officer in Charge of Lukaya Police station Vianne Birungi regretted the incident and appealed to the fishermen to be patient until the government resolves the matter to reopen the landing sites.
