The Muslim fraternity in Uganda is mourning the passing of Sheikh Dr. Abdul Qadir Balonde, the Chairman Uganda Muslim Supreme Council-UMSC.

Dr. Balonde succumbed to COVID-19, the Busoga Muslim Region Spokesperson, Shamil Byakika has confirmed.

The Sheikh passed on Monday evening at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital in the Non-Communicable Disease's unit. He had been admitted at the facility on Friday following a long battle with diabetes and hypertension but was later moved to the intensive care unit after testing positive for COVID-19.

Byakika says a team of health workers is working with Muslim clerics to give their leader a befitting send-off.

According to Dr. Mohammed Bowa the Kadhi Busoga Muslim Region, Dr. Balonde will be laid to rest in Busedde Sub County in Jinja district under strict observance of the SOPs set by the Health Ministry to contain the spread of COVID-19.

He becomes the third Muslim leader to pass in space of less than two months. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
