Ugandans who are planning to drive to their different villages to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s festivities with families have been advised to drive safely and avoid too much excitement.

While addressing the media in Kampala on Monday morning, CP Bazil Mugisha the Ag. Director Traffic and Road Safety said they are resuming the Fika Salama check points on highways.

These checkpoints will target speeding, reckless and careless driving offences that are largely responsible for road carnage.

They will also target incompetent drivers, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, vehicles in dangerous mechanical condition, boda boda riders who flout traffic regulations as well as those flouting COVID-19 SOPs while on the road.

“Checkpoints will be mounted at specific locations along the highways and they will be manned 24 hours” CP Mugisha said.

He added that all offenders committing offences will be taken to Courts of law, while the offence of failing to stop and obstructing police officers will attract automatic detention.
Also, all offenders who flout COVID-19 SOPs shall be handed over to CID for prosecution.
