Police and sister security agencies have heavily deployed in down town Kampala where riots have erupted around Kisekka Market.

On Thursday morning, the riots erupted after angry traders operating on Kyaggwe, Martin, Nakivubo, Namirembe, Mackay, Nasser, Nkurumah and Agha Khan Roads demanded to know why some of the roads leading to their arcades and shops were cordoned off by police.

Before 11:00 am, the situation was relatively calm with some business people displaying their merchandise on the streets, only for angry traders to start burning car tyres in the road, forcing police to fire teargas and bullets by 11:30am.

Many people who were caught up in the chaos were seen fleeing for their lives while some traders closed their shops.

Some of the arcades like Ravens, Shamba, Admore, Najja, Equatorial and Kisekka Auto Centre were also closed following the heavy deployment.

Patrick Onyango the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson says that police will remain deployed at Kisekka market until the situation normalizes.

One person was shot and his leg shattered at Mega standard supermarket in down town. The protests which have entered day two, were caused by the arrests of two opposition presidential candidates, Robert Kyagulanyi of NUP and Patrick Oboi Amuriat.

Their counterparts Gen. Mugisha Muntu and Gen. Henry Tumukunde have since halted their campaigns in solidarity with the duo.
