The police in Luuka district have arrested National Unity Platform, NUP presidential candidate Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert.

Police first fired teargas and dispersed all his supporters who had turned up for a rally on Wednesday morning. Kyagulanyi’s personal security team made of strong bodied men from the ghetto tried to stop the police from taking away their boss but were overpowered.

Prior to the arrests, thousands of people had formed to welcome and listen to Kyagulanyi who arrived in the area early morning.
The people who had ignored all COVID-19 guidelines like in other areas he has been to, were shouting on top of their voices as they danced to Kyagulanyi’s song “Kasukaali”.

No sooner had the rally started than police showed up and fired teargas, forcing everyone to disperse. There was also a scuffle between police and people claiming to be journalists. These were heard shouting “You are killing journalists, we shall not allow you to kill journalists” they shouted.

One of the journalists was affected by pepper spray and is being attended to by his colleagues. Police later overpowered Kyagulanyi’s men and managed to take him out of his car.
His whereabouts are unknown to his campaign team.
