A police officer attached to Bukomansimbi district was Tuesday evening rushed to the hospital after sustaining injures during a scuffle between security and National Unity Platform-NUP supporters in Masaka Town.

The officer identified as Michael Aguta, a police patrol driver for Bukomansimbi was allegedly roughed up by rowdy youths after transporting anti-riot police personnel who were deployed to secure the area.

Security teams spent a better part of Tuesday in running battles with NUP supporters who held processions to celebrate the nomination of the Presidential candidate Kyagulanyi Robert Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine.

The electoral commission and security banned processions across the country in order to contain the COVID-19 virus which is now spreading sporadically in communities.

According to Muhammad Nsubuga the Greater Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson, Aguta has been referred to Kampala for further management after receiving first aid at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital.

Police arrested some suspects in relation to the incident.

He also warned members of the public against attacking police officers on duty as they may provoke the officers to apply force.

Nsubuga noted that besides their officer currently admitted in the hospital, the rowdy mob also threw stones that inflicted a minor injury on the leg of Rogers Namanya, the Officer-in-charge of Bukomansimbi Central Police Station who was part of the team manning security in Masaka town.

In an earlier scuffle, Dr Abed Bwanika the former Peoples Development Party-PDP President General, now NUP parliamentary candidate in Kimanya-Kabonera Division was also injured as police engaged rowdy NUP supporters in town.

He was also transferred to Kampala for treatment on Tuesday evening and accuses Majid Owepukulu, the Officer-in-charge of Masaka Central Police Station of maliciously hitting him with a pistol.
