Moroto Prisons in Charge Officer Suspended over prison break

The Officer in Charge of Moroto Prisons Norman Aruho has been suspended to avoid interfering with investigations into the prison break at the facility which left more than 200 prisoners on the loose and at least 14 guns in the hands of criminals.

The Officer in Charge of Moroto Prisons Norman Aruho has been suspended to avoid interfering with investigations into the prison break at the facility which left more than 200 prisoners on the loose and at least 14 guns in the hands of criminals.

According to Uganda Prisons Spokesperson Frank Baine, the Commissioner General of Uganda Prisons Service John Byabashaija suspended Aruho along with his Deputy, Joseph Angwandia until investigations into the prison break are completed by a team set by the Commissioner General. 

In the meantime, Commissioner Byabashaija has appointed Latif Mayamba the OC Soroti Prisons to replace Aruho at Moroto Prisons. 

On September 19th, 2020, 219 inmates escaped from Moroto prison with 14 firearms. According to prison authorities, 9 inmates were shot dead during a seven-day chase, yet none of the firearms has been recovered.  

Also, nearly all the inmates are still at large. Only says 20 inmates were re-arrested and remanded at the same prison, Sam Esdotu the Karamoja Regional Prisons Commander says.
