Kawempe North MP Al-Haj Latif Ssebagala Ssengendo has officially announced his independence candidature for the same seat come 2021 General elections.
Ssebagala was initially given the National Unity Platform Lord Mayor ticket but handed it back after one day in favor of the incumbent Erias Lukwago.
He has since come out to say he would return to his constituency of Kawempe North on the NUP ticket. However, the party gave the flag to Muhammad Ssegirinya.
During a press conference on Monday, Latif said he had been requested by his constituents to stand on the same ticket again. He specifically noted that elders insisted, during the burial of his big brother Al-Haj Nasser Ntege Ssebagala that he stands for MP.
“After consultations, and for those who attended the burial on Sunday, all elders reached a decision that Al-Haj Latif Ssebagala Ssengendo returns to Kawempe North constituency as the area MP. So, I could not ignore all the voices of Kawempe North. That’s why I am declaring my independent candidature” he told journalists.
While Latif announced that he is contesting as an independent, he insists on being a member of the NUP and that he will continue supporting its president, Robert Kyagulanyi.
