Residents of A man in Mukoko village in Bukulula Sub County in Kalungu district are in shock after one of their own, a one Hassan Munkunyu set himself ablaze after suspecting his wife of being involved in an extra marital affair with their neighbor.

Eyewitnesses say Mukunyu locked his family of six people in the house on Wednesday night and torched it.

According to his wife Jenifer Natukunda, her husband returned home in unusual mood only to realize that he was carrying kerosene, which he used to torch the house.

Despite the timely community response to rescue the family from the burning house, Mukunyu remained adamant and locked himself in the bedroom.

It took police intervention to force him out of the house with serious burns. The Kalungu District Police Commander Charles Okello says Munkunyu was rescued and taken to Bukulula Health Center IV for treatment.

He wrestled the officers to frustrate their attempts to rescue him from the inferno.

Police has commenced investigations into the incident and have recorded statements from the survivors. According to the area LC III Chairperson Charles Muyanja who was part of the rescue team, Munkunyu couldn’t have acted under emotional distress.

He asked government to consider reopening houses of worship to allow community members access to spiritual and moral support to prevent similar incidents.
