Police have retrieved bodies of three people who drowned at Hakyabatunga stretch within Lake Bunyonyi, Butanda Sub County, Kabale district.

The incident happened when seven people, all residents of Katete Nkora, Kifurugutu parish, Butanda Sub County, Kabale district, were traveling on a canoe which was hit by a strong wave that forced it to overturn.

All persons on board fell into water but four of them were rescued by residents who were traveling on the same lake, while three drowned.

Elly Maate the Kigezi Regional police spokesperson identified those who were rescued as; Kabuzi Agnes female adult mukiga, Tayebwa Susan and her four months child plus Kanyonyozi Tito, male adult mukiga.

Those who drowned are; Mwebaze Africano 27yrs, Tumuhereza John Bosco 33yrs and Mugabirwe Felix. 

Maate says the group was coming from Kyevu, Nyamiryango parish, Butanda Sub County, Kabale district after a Youth Elections' interaction and were returning home when the canoe overturned at around 6:45pm on Tuesday evening.

Police with help from local divers in the community mounted a search for the three bodies and they were found at about 10:00am on Wednesday.

“They were recovered today morning at around 1000 hrs at Kyabatunda lake bank about 100 meters away from where they drowned. Arrangement for the postmortem to be done are being made so that are handed over to relatives for their descent burial” Maate said.
