16 new Covid19 cases have been confirmed in Uganda bringing the number of confirmed cases to 1,313. 

According to the Health Ministry, the 16 cases were part of the 2, 250 samples tested on Monday and 12 of these were from community alerts, 2 from contacts of previously confirmed cases and a returnee from Kenya who was under quarantine at the time of test while the other is a truck driver who arrived from South Sudan via Elegu border.

Meanwhile, 9 people who were identified as contacts of a Congolese refugee who succumbed to COVID-19 in Kyangwali Refugee settlement area have been quarantined.    

They include; 3 health workers of Maratatu Health Center III who attended to the patient when he was admitted at the facility and six family members of the deceased.

They were picked on Monday and are quarantined at Kasonga Youth Development Center in Kyangwali Sub County.

According to Dr Nicholas Kwikiriza the Kikuube District Health officer, the contacts were identified by the surveillance team which is on ground assessing the COVID-19 situation in the settlement area.

Blood samples have been picked from the nine and sent to Uganda Virus Research Institute Entebbe to ascertain their health status.

Kwikiriza added that they are tracing for more suspects who could have come into close contact with the deceased, while health experts are also disinfecting Maratatu Health Center III.

A 27-year-old male Congolese refugee and resident of Maratatu Village in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement area died from Hoima Regional Referral Hospital after testing positive for COVID-19.
