President Yoweri Museveni has been declared a sole candidate for the ruling National Resistance Movement party national chairman.

This is after his only opponent John Ssimbwa failed to fulfill requirements, according to the ruling party Electoral Commission.

“I can declare to you and to Ugandans that NRM has one contender for national chairman and that is Yoweri Kaguta Museveni,” the NRM EC chairman Dr. Odoi Tanga announced.
Upon declaration, Ssimbwa also announced he would sue the party’s EC for locking him out of the process. He says the nomination exercise of nomination will end on 28th and it is wrong for the EC to make such an announcement declaring Museveni unopposed.

“27th and 28th is when we are supposed to return the forms and get nominated by the electoral commission. There’s no way Mr. Tanga Odoi can in the middle of the process declare one person a sole candidate when the date of nomination has not passed. Mr Museveni is not nominated as per the road map we are still waiting for 27th and 28th to have him nominated and that’s when he can be declared a sole candidate or not. I am a law abiding person, I am going to court and tomorrow we shall tussle it out with the NRM commission and NRM party” Ssimbwa said.

According to Dr Tanga Odoi, Ssimbwa did not commit himself even by paying expression of interest fees.

Meanwhile, the Party has today started the exercise of issuing nomination forms to party members who want to contest for the positions of; Members of Parliament and LCV Chairpersons. The exercise runs until 31st July.

Some of the notable names that picked papers include; Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi for MP Bukoto Central, Buyaga County MP Barnabas Tinkasiimire, Mama Mabira Beatrice Anywar and Ronald Kibuule among others.

While speaking to Journalists at the Party headquarters at Kyadondo, 77 year old Ssekandi said he is Ugandan and wants to represent his people as he has been doing.
