The opposition Forum for Democratic Change, FDC has congratulated speakers who were elected last week by the Kampala City Council Authority, KCCA.
The party’s candidate Doreen Nyanjura lost the election to FDC rebel councilor Abubaker Kawalya who stood as an independent in an election held on Thursday last week.
John Kikonyogo the FDC deputy spokesperson while addressing the weekly press conference at the party head offices in Najjanankumbi on Monday morning, said the election was open and the process very transparent and fair.
“As a party we wish to congratulate all our FDC members who participated. We were honored that all people who stood for the speakership were FDC card holding members, even the one-vote candidate despite being independent, is affiliated to FDC. So the three candidates were FDC affiliated” Kikonyogo said.
He congratulated Doreen Nyanjura for representing the party well, and Hajji Abubaker Kawalya who won the race. He lamented that despite Kawalya being an FDC card holding member, it was confusing that some people were rushing to congratulate him, more than the party.
“We congratulate Hajji Abubaker Kawalya. As you are aware, Kawalya is an FDC card holding member, despite the fact that some people were rushing to congratulate him more than ourselves, the party which identified him from university, groomed him and we are happy that he assumed that office” Kikonyogo noted.
Kikonyogo added that despite some contradictions, they are calling upon party members across the country who had left the party, to come back and work together. “We invite all the councilors who may have had some issues here and there and we sit together as a party. We ask them to serve the people of Kampala as we all struggle to change the country.”
