Motorists leaving the city to celebrate Christmas and End of Year festivities in different parts of the country have been urged to follow traffic rules and ensure a crash free season.

The message was delivered by Norman Musinga, the Kampala Metropolitan traffic chief while delivering the festive season message to motorists at CPS Kampala.

Musings says the mission for Kampala Metropolitan traffic is to ensure "a crash free season on Highways, roads Municipalities and towns." He adds that this can only be achieved through collective effort with all road users.

He cautioned motorists to ensure that their vehicles are in good mechanical conditions, safety belts are fastened, they should carry driving permits, and avoid overspeeding.

Motorists were also urged to avoid driving vehicles without number plates fixed in the prescribed manner, while passengers are urged to speak up in case of overspeeding while parents are not to allow children who are not competent enough to drive.

This morning, at least five people were reported dead following an accident at Kyabakuza on Masaka-Mbarara highway following an accident involving three vehicles.

The festive season is known to have many tired and drunken drivers who kill people especially on highways. Musings warned that if anyone is reported and arrested for breaking traffic rules, they will be held for not less than 24 hours.
