14 suspects including women are in police custody for their alleged involvement in the murder of different elderly persons.   

According to Fred Enanga Police Spokesperson, elderly persons are being targeted by their relatives for their property, adding that at least 7 elderly people living in their houses alone were hacked to death between July 14 and August 10th, 2019.  

Enanga adds that they have registered ten incidents involving attacks on elderly persons countrywide over the past one month and seven of the victims died on spot after being hacked.  

He added that four cases were reported from Rwizi region which covers Mbarara, Uganda, Bushenyi and Sheema districts, while the other cases have been recorded in Elgon region particularly Mbale, West Nile and Kigezi region. 

The deceased have been identified as Adoniya Rumanyisa 70 who was  killed by his relatives on July 31st, 2019, Zelina Akena 80 who was killed in Maracha district by his grandson, Julius Mawa using a hoe and Yefusa Mayimani was hacked to death by his wife with the help of a neighbor who disguised himself as a visitor, among others.  

According to the spokesperson, police management has directed Regional and District Police to ensure that all elderly persons within their territorial command are protected.
