Leaders from Northern Uganda’s Acholi Sub-Region have been advised to direct their efforts to homestead incomes as the main key for social transformation of their people by changing the mentality of wananchi and their production perspective so that they graduate out of the peasantry to commercial oriented agriculture.

“Please leaders change the way of our people. Cows eat grass not roads. Stop wasting our time.  I am telling you what we did and on that note, you can do so many activities even in the remote area,” he said.

The call was made by President Yoweri Museveni while speaking to leaders from the Acholi Sub-Region at the National College, Unyama in Gulu Municipality on Wednesday. The Sub- Region comprises the districts of Gulu, Nwoya, Agago, Amuru, Kitgum, Lamwo and Pader.

The President expressed dissatisfaction with leaders who talk things that have nothing to do with people’s survival, singling out the issue of land that is no longer productive because of bad human settlements at the watch of their leaders.

“I don’t like leadership to darkness. Leadership must be towards light not darkness,” he cautioned.

Mr. Museveni told the Acholi leaders to take the positions and roles bestowed on them as serious and help their people or else they be like their past leaders who failed miserably because of misusing their positions.

“I have seen people failing as if they are bewitched. God has lifted you but you are still talking and you misuse that facility. It is up to you, he said.

He asked the leaders not to bring bad luck to themselves that I saw destroying many of our leaders.  He said that if they have a chance to lead and talk, they should do that eloquently.

Quoting the Book of James in the Bible, President Museveni advised the leaders to use their tongues carefully for it is the most poisonous part of human body. He cautioned them against telling lies that could easily result in people killing each other.

Mr. Museveni advised the councilors from the Sub-Region to always look for better ways of handling challenges in order to realize harmony instead of adding what he referred to as ‘fire to the already existing problems’ and cited the misunderstanding between Uganda and Kenya over Migingo Island as an example. He noted that the issue has not stopped development of other projects in other areas such as the road to Nimule, among others.

The President called for the 4-acre model plan of production to fight household poverty. He said the government is going to set up the Youth Value Addition Fund on top of the existing Funds in order to empower the youth and enable them take up the production of items that are currently being imported.

During the meeting, NRM leaders from the Acholi zone unanimously passed a resolution in support of President Museveni to continue steering and leading the country come 2021 and beyond.
