Security officials are searching for a Uganda People’s Defence Forces-UPDF soldier who is alleged to have tortured, killed and dumped the body of a police constable at Mulago City mortuary before disappearing into thin air.
Police reports indicate that the suspect, Private Difat Kawaga, with the help of Muhammad Kimbugwe and Lieutenant Swaleh Twegumisa, aided the torture and death of Police Constable Gideon Mbirire.
Police says Mbirire was tortured to death by security personnel who arrested him on accusations of hiring out a gun. However, Kawaga claimed to have saved the officer from a mob on northern bypass.
This is said to contradict information in the mortuary reference book, which indicated that Kawaga found the body, with no particulars, dumped in Kawanda.
Mbirire was last week arrested along with Asp. Wakisadha Yakub the office in Charge of Kawempe Police Station following an operation led by Hassan Sabakaki, the Kawempe District Internal Security Officer –DISO, and other operatives of the Internal Security Organization (ISO).
Available information indicates that Yakub, together with the OC of Nansana Police station are being held at Kawempe on allegations of murder.
Fred Enanga the Police spokesperson declined to comment on the matter, saying that he was busy handling the matter of Ronald Ssebulime, who police gunned down in cold blood.
