Over 12,000 graduands will be presented with degrees and diplomas from Makarere University during the 69th graduation ceremony slated to take place in a fortnight. The ceremony will run from Tuesday 15th to Friday 18th January 2019.

Addressing a press conference at the university this morning, the Makerere Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe clarified that only candidates who satisfied graduation requirements within the set timeline will be allowed at the ceremony.

Some of the requirements include; clearance of all outstanding fees owed to the university and payment of graduation fees totaling up to Shillings 218,000 for Ugandans and East Africans, while international candidates pay 103$ and an additional 108,000 shillings.

“The unique Makerere university gown cost of 98,000 has also been incorporated into the graduation fees. This gown is for candidates graduating with Bachelors and Masters Degrees as well as Undergraduate and Postgraduate Diplomas. All PHD graduands will purchase specialized gowns from other service providers” Nawangwe said.

He encourages graduands who have already paid all fees to pick their gowns from the senate building at the campus upon presentation of their receipts.

Prof. Nawangwe also talked of reports that some students claim to have fulfilled all requirements but their names are missing on graduation list. According to the VC, preliminary investigations indicate that some of these students could have submitted their theses and research reports after the deadline.

He however says that where it is too late, such candidates will be allowed to pick their transcripts but graduate at subsequent ceremonies.

“We therefore encourage to always adhere to the timelines issued by the academic registrar to avoid last minute disappointments” he warned.
