Two people are being held by Police in Kakira Town Council on suspicion of being high way robbers. The duo was arrested during an operation conducted on Wednesday afternoon by officers from Kakira.

James Wamunyerere the Kakira Division Police Commander identifies the suspects as Ayub Waiswa, 42, and a 14 year old juvenile. The suspects have been robbing passengers along the Jinja-Iganga highway using a toy gun and UPDF uniforms.

According to Wamunyerere, the duo’s main target was trailer drivers who usually make stopovers in Kakira, an area surrounded by sugarcane plantations. So far, police has received 23 cases of highway robberies reported in the month of September alone.

"In last month alone, 23 cases of armed robberies from foreigners mainly Kenyans and South Sudanese were reported so the area security committee resolved to crackdown the perpetrators of the attacks," he said.

One of the victims identified as Moses Kaabule, told journalists that he was approached by the juvenile for help, only for the older robber to approach, strangle and rob him.

"That boy stopped my car and started crying claiming that he had lost his way home but when he opened the door, another person thumped me up and ordered me to surrender my two phones and wallet," Kaabule narrated.

The suspects are detained on charges of illegal possession of firearms and government stores.
