The electoral commission has set up a technical committee to investigate claims that the National Voters register is not credible enough to be used in any election.

The development comes just days after president Yoweri Museveni threatened to disband the entire commission for failure to hold credible elections in the past few months.

The commission under the leadership of Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon has been accused of allowing opposition candidates to ferry in voters from different parts of the country in order to win the just concluded Municipality elections in Jinja East, and Arua.

A letter authored by Justice Byabakama on Tuesday indicates that the committee will investigate with the view of establishing facts of the claims and be able to apply the necessary remedial measures where necessary in the future elections.

"The electoral commission wishes to assure all stakeholders that we are committed to delivering free, fair and transparent elections whose cornerstone is a credible National Voters' Register" Byabakama wrote.

The commission has been under pressure after breaking its relationship with election observers CCEDU some months back. This was seen as a step to organizing unfair, rigged elections. It is unclear who or how many members ate on thia technical committee.
