22 people have been confirmed dead after a Monday evening accident involving an Isuzu ELF truck Reg.No. UAW 739M that failed to negotiate a corner while transporting them and their merchandize in Kisoro.

22 people have been confirmed dead after a Monday evening accident involving an Isuzu ELF truck Reg.No. UAW 739M that failed to negotiate a corner while transporting them and their merchandize in Kisoro.

11 of these died on spot, while 11 others died at Kisoro hospital where they had been admitted. The traders were from Mengo in Muko Subcounty in Rubanda district, going for a daily market in Kisoro Municipality.

According to Patrick Charles Okotto the Kisoro district police commander, the accident occurred at the rails of Kanaba hills in Kanaba Sub county Kisoro district. 

31 more victims are still admitted at Kisoro and Mutorere hospitals where they are receiving medical attention and according to witnesses, the death toll could increase. At least 60 traders were on the truck together with their sacks of potatoes, crates of soda and beer, among other merchandize. 

Some of the deceased are; Moses Arinaitwe, Scovia Oriahaba, Samatina Kemigisha, Poku Apurunari, Adrine Iramashirwe, Festino Kasande, Berra Tindimwebwa, Rogers Imanishimwe, Peace Akanyijuka, Mike Maxensia, Mary Nyiramenyize and one minor, a daughter to Tindimwebwa. All these are residents of Muko Sub county, Rubanda district while others are from Kisoro. 

Police and other security organs as well as district authorities are investigating to ascertain whether or not, the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
