Government has announced Tuesday 10th July 2018 a public holiday, as the country prepares to go to polls to elect Local Council leaders.

The electoral commission recently announced that citizens would elect LC leader in the over 1,134 villages all over the country, after over 15 years of waiting.

Nominations of candidates are ongoing. They started yesterday July 4th and are expected to end today. Thousands of candidates have so far been nominated for both LC and 2 seats.

According to the Chairperson, Electoral Commission, Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, the election of the Village (LC I) Chairperson shall be by the voters lining behind the nominated candidates or their representatives, or their portraits or symbols, in accordance with Section 111(2) of the Local Government Act CAP 243 (as amended).

In a statement dated July 3rd 2018, Catherine Birakwate Musingwiire the permanent secretary ministry of public service writes that; “"The Honorable Minister of Public Service Informs the general public that Tuesday 10th July, 2018 will be observed as a Public Holiday throughout Uganda to enable all Ugandans to participate in the local council 1 elections to be conducted by the electoral commission.”

According to the EC, counting of people is expected to last at least 30 minutes, and the results shall be read immediately.
