Makerere University administration has revealed that at least 300 million Shillings is needed for the renovation of Mary Stuart hall, following a fire that gutted same facility on Saturday morning.

A police statement on Saturday indicated that the fire started from a canteen on the ground floor at around 4.a.m, before spreading to other areas.

Eng. Dr. Charles Wana-Etyem, the Makerere University Council Chairperson on Tuesday directed management to renovate the burnt building within two months before students report for the next semester in August.

Also, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe Makerere the University Vice Chancellor says the council directed them to overhaul all halls of residence in the university. But, Nawangwe says they will give priority to Mary Stuart Hall, adding that University engineers are currently assessing the cost of the repair.

He observed that the university has a few firefighting equipment in halls of residence, explaining that they would have managed the Mary Stuart hall fire much better if the fire hydrants were functional.

"This is going to be part of our plan during the overall face-lift of our halls of residence," Nawangwe added.
