Uganda will on Saturday this week “April 28th 2018” join the rest of the world to commemorate the World Day for Safety and health at work.

This year’s celebrations will be held under the global theme; “Generation safe and healthy.” While in Uganda, the National theme is; “Osh in enterprise development and competitiveness.”

This development was communicated by Joice Moriku Kaducu, the state minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development, while speaking to the press at Uganda media centre this afternoon.

According to the minister, commemoration of this day is important as it raises awareness on how to make workplaces safe and healthy.

Meanwhile, this year this day falls on the same date as World day against Child Labour. Both are coming together with a campaign to improve the safety and health of young workers and end child labour.

According to statistics, 541 million young workers of 15-24 years old account for more than 15% of the world’s labour force and suffer up to 40% high rate of non-fatal occupational injuries than adult workers older than 25 years.

“As we commemorate the day, the world of work is undergoing major processes of change. At the national lever, the country is engaged in a number of projects in oil and Gas extraction, transportation and refining, hydro power construction, road works and others. This calls for deeper understanding of these projects in order effectively handle then challenges they possess and advance government’s commitment to decent work and social justice for all Ugandans” the minister said.
