Doctors at the Uganda Heart Institute, on April 3rd 2018 successfully carried out the first ever due procedures for diagnosing life threatening irregular heartbeats known as electrophysiology study and its treatment, known as Radio Frequency ablation.

According to Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, this is a non-surgical treatment.

She told the media at the Ministry of health offices today, that a total of 13 patients had been identified with irregular heartbeats and they have benefited from this procedure. 11 of them were successfully worked upon between 3rd and 5th of April 2018, while 2 were further identified with other complications and their treatment differed to a future date.

The minister further explained that the 11 patients were discharged and are out of danger. Some of the symptoms presented by patients with irregular heartbeats include;
•    Pounding heartbeats
•    Dizziness
•    And fainting attacks. They risk death if these irregular heartbeats are not stopped immediately.

These abnormal heartbeats, according to statistics, constitute 19% of the heart disease burden worldwide, while at the Uganda heart institute, 25% of the patients seen on a daily basis.

Minister Aceng says the Uganda heart institute is able to carry out all major and minor procedures in the heart.
