President Yoweri Museveni has this evening sacked the Inspector General of Police, IGP Gen. Kale Kayihura and security minister, Maj. Gen. Henry Tumukunde.

In a communication this evening, Museveni replaced the duo with AIGP Okoth Ochola and Gen. Elly Tumwiine respectively.
The president also appointed Brig. Sabiiti Mzeei as the deputy IGP.

The development comes in the wake of murders in Kampala and other areas of the country which remain unsolved. The duo however, has also been involved in a petty fight for some months. Tumukunde has been accused of undermining the works of Uganda police, under the leadership of Gen. Kayihura.

Recently, the now former security minister threatened to beat up police officers who were carrying out an eviction at a bar in Kampala, chasing them away like his dogs. This drove the rift even further, with the IGP ordering his boys not to listen to anyone when carrying out his orders.

In his statement this evening, the president said his government is working on solving the issue of cameras. “We are solving the hardware issue (cameras etc) and soft is easy to handle because the ones who have the opportunity to serve, if the fail, plenty of other Ugandans are available, educated and will serve. Laxity is shown by escape of suspected dangerous criminals from a courtroom like the ones in masaka who were accused of hacking people” the President wrote.

He added that a crime free society is the one that will solve problems of unemployment once they address the cost-hickers in production. Kayihura’s sacking is a joyful moment for several Ugandans who have for years believed he has failed to manage the force.

The president has also over the years accused the force of harboring criminals who have in turn killed officers and other important people in government. The sacking also comes at a time when a daughter to Museveni’s friend was kidnapped and murdered after 3 weeks, without any progress from police in finding her, or her killers. The police has since offered a 100million cash prize for anyone with information about the heartless criminals.
