Kanungu police have in custody Heph Mutisa Kwesiga, a senior nursing officer at Kanungu Health Center IV for illegal possession of government stores. She was picked up on Wednesday following a tip off by residents.

According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, a search in her home led to the recovery of 22 bottles of ceftriaxone, 10 packets of oxytocin, 2 boxes of children clothes, 14 pairs of surgical gloves, 1 jerry can of liquid soap, 1 digital thermometer, lamp, 3 mattresses, kidney dish and a weighing scale among others.

Maate adds that they are hunting for the suspect's son, Philemon Kato who is said to have been helping her to steal the items. He says the suspect is being held at Kanungu Police station as investigations are ongoing.

Kwesiga declined to comment on the matter. Josephine Katsya, the Kanungu District Chairperson has condemned the theft, saying it is an embarrassment to the profession.

However, the development was received with mixed reactions from the public. Mukasa James says the ministry of health is to blame for letting this go on unbothered.

Mukasa explains that each time he visits Mulago, doctors refer him to their pharmacies to but medicine, arguing that government hospitals have a few capsules, panadol and hedex.

He says such doctors should be arrested and convicted for five years to serve as an example.

John Ssekidde says he supports doctors since too many drugs expire in government stores. “If someone steals and sells the medicine to someone in need, I have no problem with it.”
