Government stands ground on Simcard Deactivation

Government will not consider the motion passed by Parliament last evening, counseling Uganda Communications Commission, UCC to extend the Simcard verification exercise by not more than a year, starting today May 19th, the earlier set deadline.

In the plenary session chaired by Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, Leader of Opposition Winnie Kiiza brought a motion askeing that Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) extends the verification and validation exercise of SIM cards.

Kiiza also demanded that UCC directs telecommunication companies to deactivate SIM Card applications in a phased manner.

Kiiza's motion was seconded by Shadow Attorney General Wilfred Niwagaba, Manjiya County MP John Baptist Nambeshe and Mukono South MP Johnson Muyanja Ssenyonga.

Niwagaba, the Ndorwa West MP said that some Ugandans have not got their national IDs because of the inefficiency of the National Identification and Registration Authority(NIRA).

However, Frank Tumwebaze, the minister for ICT says the deadline set by UCC stands; “while #Govt notes&will address issues of @Parliament_UG in regard 2 #SimcardVerification period, #Deadline stands!

He added that Issues raised by Parliament like loss of money thru switch off of Mobile Money will all be mitigated.

Tumwebaze has called a press conference at media centre, to inform the country on the progress of the exercise.
