Three Police officers, Herbert Mwesigye, Barbie Nathan and Sylvia Namuwombe have defied directives by Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Ddumba Ssentamu to demolish their food kiosks on the University premises.

Makerere University in January this year, demolished all kiosks on the university campus in an attempt to cut down utility bills. The three police officers however, secretly re-erected their kiosks near Makerere Police station and Livingstone quarters.

These kiosks operate as cafeterias providing cheap food to students. Prof. Ddumba has since directed the trio to demolish the kiosks over the Easter holidays in vain. On January 19th, Herbert Byamugisha wrote to Prof Ddumba through his lawyers, Byamugisha Gabriel & Co advocates, saying his structure is not illegal and serves as his family house.

"I use the said structure as a home for my family and children who are mandated to be housed by police. This is therefore to advise you to desist from making the demolition threats," the letter reads.

But Prof. Ddumba says the kiosks must be removed. He says that while the University Estates and Works department will deal with university staff with kiosks, he wants the Inspector General of Police, Kale Kayihura to handle his officers.
