President Yoweri Museveni has instituted a commission of inquiry into land laws led by Lady Justice Catherine Bamugemereire as its chairperson.

The announcement was made by minister of lands Hon. Betty Amongi who said the commission is to investigate and inquire into the law processes into which land is acquired in Uganda.

“The president has in exercising the powers conferred upon him under the commissions of inquiry Act (CAP 166), appointed a commission of inquiry into the effectiveness of law, policies and processes of Land Acquisition, Land Administration, Land management and Land registration in Uganda.”

The Lady Justice Bamugemereire commission has as members; Owek. Robert Sebunya, Mrs Mary Oduka Ochan, Mrs Joyce Habasa, Dr. Rose Nakayi, Hon. Fred Ruhindi, and Mr. George Bagonza Tinkamanyire.

The commission shall be assisted by; Mrs Olive Karazawe as secretary, Dr. Douglas Singiza as assistant secretary research, Mr. Ebert Byenkya as Lead counsel and Mr. John Bosco Rujagaata Suuza as Co-Lead Counsel.

The commission will investigate and inquire into the relevance of respective bodies in the preservation of wetlands, assess the legal and process framework into government land acquisition, and make recommendations into improving the policy of "land management in Uganda.

Hon. Amongi also told the press that the time frame for the execution of this subject shall be six months. She has called upon stakeholders and anybody that has information that will be helpful to forward it to the commission which will be sworn in by 10th of January to begin their work.

According to Amongi, there have been rampant land evictions and several complaints received from public related to land grabbing delayed transactions among others adding that there has also been unfair treatment of genuine land owners, tenants and other land users.

Bamugemereire is famous for heading a commission of inquiry into UNRA that unearthed the rot at the authority.

Police, music promoters and Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) will verify musicians performing this festive season in their respective localities.
