Following his recent invasion of a Catholic Church prayer gathering, where he nearly thumped the Parish priest Rev. Fr. Kenneth Beinganamuntu, Moses Mwebesa the Buhweju resident district commissioner, RDC has slapped a ban on all night time crusades and prayer meetings, citing security reasons.

The Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Mbarara early this week wrote to the Minister for presidency, demanding an apology from Mwebesa, who stormed a church and halted a Eucharistic celebration, ordering all Christians to disappear and threatening to beat up the Parish priest.

This angered the Catholic community who demanded an apology over the humiliation.

However, in a letter dated January 31st, seen by our editor this afternoon, the RDC ordered a ban on fundraisings, crusades, night meetings, and overnights.

It is addressed to the district returning officer, and copied to the DPC, DISO, LCV Chairman Buwheju district, and a litany of other people. At the moment, all churches are being guarded by the police.

According to deputy police spokesperson Poly Namaye, the parish management had not informed the district security committee which is headed by the RDC, about the night prayers.

“Bihanga Catholic church organized a crusade for over 1000 believers without the knowledge of neither the DPC nor the RDC Buhweju, who is the head of security in that district.  The RDC learnt of the Crusade & notified the DPC who then moved together to establish this fact on the night of 30th Janaury at Bihanga.”

She says the Police remains committed to working closely with the church and all religious fraternities in ensuring peace and security in Uganda, especially during the forth coming elections.
