Police says investigations are ongoing into the allegations of trafficking of persons to the Middle East countries, days after a ban was slapped on Ugandan citizens taking jobs as domestic workers.

Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson explains that from 7 witnesses/victims, many migrant workers faced a challenge of poor legal protection and practices of modern-day-slavery, that included loss of lives due to torture, suicides driven by inhumane treatment, physical and psychological trauma, beatings, insults, intimidation, threats, sexual harassment, failure to pay wages, court harassment against migrant workers who flee from their employers.

“The case under GEFs 001/2015, 289/2015 and 305/2015, have been submitted to the office of the DPP for perusal and legal guidance on acts of Human Traffic C/S 3(1) (a) of the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act 2009.

Mr. Enanga adds that the police is tracing for accomplices to the prime suspect Ms. Khalima Abdalla that include Charity and Moses, of Supreme Security Limited, a labor recruiting company.

“In addition, the particulars of their accomplice based in Saudi Arabia, one MUTAB PASHA AL SUMMERY, based in HALL, Saudi Arabia, are being forwarded to the Directorate of Interpol and International Relations for further inquiries.” Enanga said.

The investigations come after a widespread criticism on the plight of migrant workers to the Middle East countries and specifically the Saudi Arabia.
