Hassan Ssempebwa allegedly beat his daughter Rehema Nampera to death on Thursday.

Ssempebwa was apparently annoyed to return home and find that his playful daughter had broken some plates in their house.

The Kasasa village resident then picked up a stick and thrashed his daughter who passed out as he was still punishing her.

Nampera was rushed to a nearby clinic but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Moses Mbaga, the officer in charge of Kasasa police post, says Ssempebwa has been transferred to Kyotera police station for his safety. Residents had attempted to lynch Ssempebwa upon learning of the death of Nampera.

Mbaga says that police is currently overwhelmed by increasing cases of children rights’ violation in Kasasa.

Cases of parents beating children to death in Rakai are common.

The most recent case involves a father who beat his 15-year old son to death for stealing 1000 shillings from their home. The incident occurred in Mugamba Village, Kanabulemu parish, Kyebe Sub County. Gasta Kasendwa is the father accused of beating his son to death in October 2013.

Hassan Ssempebwa is a resident of Kasasa, Kakuto Sub County in Rakai district. Ssempebwa has been a single father since his relationship with Nampera’s mother broke down. He is a casual labourer.

Police say he may face murder charges once a post-mortem report from Kakute hospital determines the cause of death of the two-year old girl.
