A Bachelor of Arts (Education) Student also an independent candidate, Ochieng Joseph, is the new Guild President of Kyambogo University.

Ochieng, beat seven other contenders in polls held yesterday at the campus.

He polled 4,810 votes, followed by FDC candidate Ashaba Michael who scored 2,109, while NRM candidate Kishemeirwe Patricia came third with 1,314.

Other candidates in the race were Kansiime Sarah who scored 740, Odong Denis with 154 , Obbo Andrew with 142, Opio Simon Peter with 133 and Aliga Avuni Rogers with 105 votes, according to results  officially announced by the students' guild electoral commission chairperson Joseph Ssempagala.

Ochieng won the common man's title after presenting himself with no posters, even when political party-backed contenders seemingly spent millions of Shillings on posters which were pinned within the precincts of the university.

His supporters described him as amiable and down-to-earth. "We supported him because he knows our challenges and he is the only person who can speak for the common students since he is a common man," Agaba Joseph, one of his supporters told Uganda Radio Network.

He eventually won in all 6 faculties that make up Kyambogo University.

In a brief speech after being officially announced guild president, he said; "This is your victory…time has come when Kyambogo guild president will to go to prison for defending students' rights. Time has come for us to start a new journey.
