Speke Resort & Conference Centre Munyonyo emerged the Best Luxury Hotel at the inaugural Ekkula Pearl of Africa Tourism Awards. Speke Resort topped seasoned rivals Sheraton Hotel, Serena Hotel and Imperial Royale Hotel to the award. The management, judges and guests pointed out some key reasons as to why the 5-star hotel deserved the accolade.

Thriving to Improve their Standards: In his acceptance speech, Greg Spetzer, the general manager commended the hard work of the staff at Speke Resort and noted that the hotel aims at improving their standards with every passing year. “We will continue reviewing our standards to meet the market needs and make Uganda the best tourism destination,” said Spetzer.

Convenient Location: Speke Resort Munyonyo is located 12km outside Kampala city centre, by the shores of Lake Victoria. The resort offers the tranquility of the country-side in the city setting of Kampala.

The Ruparelia Group set up the hotel in 2001, and six years later accommodated the visiting Presidents and Prime Ministers at the 2007 Commonwealth Conference (CHOGM), and has gone on to host diplomatic and other VIP delegates to Uganda.

The Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga, the Chief Guest at the awards’ ceremony, acknowledged the investors of the tourism sector for their continued role in creating jobs.

General Elly Tumwine, the head of the judges’ panel, thanked the private sector for investing in the tourism sector.
