Police in Masaka have revealed that two teachers at Blessed Sacrament Kimaanya S.S have been suspended on accusations of corporal punishment.

The school has also announced it is reopening on Monday after indefinitely suspending over 1000 learners who were accused of attempting to burn down the school during a violent strike.

Senior six learners report on Monday, Senior three and five report on Wednesday while Senior one and two report on Friday.

Moses Nanoka, the Masaka District Police Commander says police have engaged with the Board of Directors, teachers, school authorities among others on issues that led students to strike.

Nanoka says two teachers have so far been temporarily suspended from the school over concerns about corporal punishment. He says since corporal punishment was banned in Uganda, police will investigate and ensure that suspects are brought to book.

Nanoka also says the fourteen learners who were arrested for instigating the strike have since been granted bail but continue to aid police in investigations.

Meanwhile the school head teacher, Allan Muwonge says the school is upgrading its power system to minimize power blackouts, put in place water reservoirs, and reconstruct cleaner toilets for learners.

He adds that the school is also doing an independent analysis on accusations of corporal punishment raised by learners.

It is alleged that the school suffered a power blackout that lasted hours, disorganizing the reading and learning process for learners who were preparing for forthcoming examinations.

Angered by the incident , the learners led by five ring leaders in candidate classes demanded that the  power problem be fixed to enable them study for mock examinations.

The students also complained of poor feeding at school, sexual harrasment on female learners by teachers, corporal punishment and negligence from the school administration.

The learners then threatened to burn down the boy’s Dormitory if their concerns were not adhered to, prompting them to set mattresses ablaze.

The school administration immediately reported the incident to police, who swung into action, arresting five ringleaders who had already  burned five mattresses. Five ring leaders were arrested while others were suspended indefinitely.
