Police in Kyankwanzi District are holding a security guard, 18, accused of holding a couple at gunpoint before robbing them and raping the woman.

The suspect, Emmanuel Akol, who is attached to Corporate Security Services, attacked one Paul Nteziyaremwa and his wife while on their way back from Kiryandongo Trading Center, Bukomero Village in Ntunda Town Council.

The reportedly drunken couple was returning home from the bar when they were attacked at night on June 22, 2022, close to Premier Distillers factory and sugar cane plantation where the suspect was guarding.

It is alleged that Akol was holding a rifle with ammunition that he fired in the air to scare his victims before pouncing on the woman.

Racheal Kawala, the Wamala Region Police Spokesperson, says Akol fired once in the air and ordered the couple to sit down before robbing them of their mobile phones and an unspecified amount of money.

She adds that the suspect told Nteziyaremwa to run away immediately and leave the wife, a command he quickly adhered to by running very fast to the road.

He then directed the wife to run in the opposite direction towards the sugarcane plantation.

Police say Akol followed the woman at gunpoint before mercilessly raping her by the plantation.

The 2021 police crime report shows that 1,486 incidents of rape were reported compared to  1,519 cases reported in  2020, showing a decrease of 2.1%. A total of 1,396 adult females and 90 female juveniles were victims of rape.
