One person is dead and scores have been critically injured in ethnic clashes between the Lango and Nuer from South Sudan in Palabek Refugee settlement in Palabek Ogili Sub County in Lamwo district.

According to the Refugee Welfare Council Chairperson, Robert Ocan, the clashes occurred on Tuesday evening at Zone 4 Block 6 when a member of the Nuer community was hacked.

The development prompted his clansmen to plan an attack against the Lango community members, which was halted.

Ocan narrated that the clash between the two groups started from a dispute over a piece of land that was allocated to the refugees by the host community for cultivation. Fresh fighting broke out on Wednesday evening, which claimed the life of James Nanuka, a member of the Lango ethnic group.

At least 20 other people were injured, with two of them in critical condition and are admitted at Padibe Health Centre IV.
The situation has since returned to partial normalcy following the intervention of the Lamwo Resident District Commissioner, James Nabinson Kidega and joint deployment of Uganda Police and Uganda Peoples Defense Forces.

According to Kidega, two people including a refugee block leader have been arrested in connection for inciting violence among the two ethnic groups.
Meanwhile, another attack involving the Nuer, Acholi and Lutughu ethnic groups from South Sudan briefly erupted in Zone 5 Block 5A and Block 5B settlement on Wednesday evening but was contained by security.
