Two police officers in Mubende are in trouble after they were arrested for allegedly torturing an elderly man to his death during the enforcement of curfew.

Rachael Kawala the Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson says the suspects are Godfrey Musisikwa, the officer in Charge of Nabingoola Police station and Corporal Moses Mwesigye.

The duo was arrested in connection with the death of 70-year-old Ponsiano Tushabe, a resident of Kabafukuzi Village Council in Nabingoola Sub County. One of his sons says he moved out of the house and saw a police officer kick the deceased in his ribs. At least three ribs were broken in the process.

Preliminary information indicates that Tushabe was arrested by the accused officers on Sunday for violating the curfew after he was found drinking with three others in a pub.
Kawala indicates that the duo allegedly assaulted Tushabe leading to his death.

However, the family insists, Tushabe was found in his small shop at around 7:30pm which is past curfew time. They claim he was of advanced age and should not have been beaten up, but rather cuffed and taken to the police station.

Tushabe’s condition worsened in the police cells, they rushed him to Nabingoola health center III but the health workers referred him to Mubende hospital from where he breathed his last.

The deceased’s body was handed over the relatives for burial and investigations are ongoing to establish the allegations of torture before the two police officers are arraigned in court for murder.
