At least six people in Kole district are in police custody for allegedly blocking their children from participating in the on-going Measles-Rubella immunization exercise.
The residents include; Joyce Atala, Denis Okweny, Moses Oleo, Emmanuel Omara, Morris Okello and Denial Egoo, all from Atop village in Alito Sub County.
The Resident District Commissioner, Joana Omara Olweny ordered for the arrest of the six residents on Thursday.
Under their cult-like group identified as Church Evangelical Revival- CER a breakaway from Church of Uganda in the area, the residents argued that the on-going immunization exercise is against their religious believes.
This followed attempts by RDC Olweny to convince the residents to accept their children to be immunized failed.
The culprits are directly sabotaging government programs, according to the RDC.
Omara says the same residents during the previous immunization drives were negative about the exercise and on Tuesday they requested to be given five days for them to conduct special prayer during which they would consult their ‘god’ before the children are immunized.
According to the Ministry of health, more than 10,000 children are expected to benefit from the on-going five-day Measles-Rubella immunization and polio vaccination which started on Wednesday.
