Police in Northern Uganda has in custody the Team leader of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on allegations of sexually harassing girls in districts of Kitgum and Lamwo.
Ali Khamis, the Team Leader of UNHCR in Lamwo district was arrested after reports that he allegedly molested & sodomised up to five young girls, some of whom are battling rectal damages in Hospital.
His arrest was confirmed by Kitgum Municipality MP; Beatrice Atim Anywar who has been following the case. She told the media in Kampala today that her intervention into the matter forced the UNHCR bosses in Geneva to send for a private investigative team in the country that has since confirmed that indeed Khamis is an official of UNHCR but not a diplomat.
"The investigators advised us to take any legal action against Khamis which prompted me to make contacts with the Director CID, Grace Akullo that has since called for the file from Gulu despite being shielded for months," Anywar said. She adds that the efforts have since resulted in Khamis' arrest. She said initially the suspect was being shielded by Police in Kitgum.
Anywar singled out a one Achan Jenifer aged 22 who is currently hospitalized in Kampala but in a sorry state passing out stool uncontrollably.
Achan reportedly became Khamis' victim after they met at Little Palace hotel and he convinced her to work at his home promising to give her a better pay compared to UGX 100, 000 she earned.
