56 people have been arrested and taken to Nalufenya police station on charges of holding unlawful assemblies.

A police statement released this afternoon indicates that on Wednesday July 19th, 24 people were arrested from Magere, 14 from St. Kizito Kiri, 13 from Gayaza, and 5 people from Nabutaka, Nangabo Subcounty in Kyadondo East Constituency.

AIGP Asan Kasingye, the police spokesperson indicates that those arrested contravened section 55 of the Penal code Act.

“Whereas 29(d) of the Ugandan Constitution provides for freedom of assembly and to demonstrate peacefully and unarmed, there are other enabling laws that must be considered such as Section 55 of the Penal Code Act and Section 5 of the Public Order Management Act” he wrote.

Kasingye did not provide identities of the arrested person, saying their details will be provided in due course. “They will be produced in Court as soon as the charges brought against them are sanctioned by the DPP.

He assured their relatives of detainees’ safety in police custody as investigations continue, adding that relatives and friends are free to visit their people.

It is believed that FDC’s iron woman and drama queen Ingrid Turinawe is part of the group. The group was allegedly preaching in different churches against the age limit bill.
