The police in Kampala have arrested two Forum for Democratic Change party officials identified as Awoli Moses and party deputy secretary General, Harold kaija as they tried to access the Democratic Republic of Congo Embassy in Kampala to demand the release of Sam Mugumya and four other party members who are being held in DRC and are yet to face the neighboring country's Court Martial over links to ADF rebels.
The two were arrested at the command of Jinja Road DPC, a one Moses Eliai Osega who tried to engage a group of disappointed party officials but failed as they demanded to meet the Ambassador and hand in a written petition expressing their dissatisfaction with Mugumya’s continued arrest after 2 years of detention.
Mugumya was arrested two years ago at the congo boarder running away from Uganda, a move FDC claims was meant to save him from political persecution.
Prior to the arrests this morning, Harold Kaija said they just wanted to speak to the Ambassador about the trial of their members before the DRC Court martial and share their concerns as a party.
Francis Mwijukye the Buhweju MP and senior party member said they had not secured an appointment with the Ambassador, since the Embassy in Kololo is a public office which should and can be accessed by all Ugandans any time.
He said all they needed was to hear about the fate of their party members. The group marched peacefully from party offices in Katonga and unlike on other occasions, they did not cause any chaos, until an engagement with police, which resulted into the arrests.
Those arrested were taken to Jinja Road police station, while Francis and other officials escaped in a vehicle driven by Dr. Kiiza Besigye’s driver, Kato.
