Cop Arrested For Raping Suspect in Custody

Court in Soroti has remanded a cop accused of raping a suspect in detention. Alfonse Olinga appeared on Tuesday before John Michael Apedu, the Soroti Grade II magistrate.

Prosecution led by Jonathan Okello, the Soroti Resident State Attorney told court that on 12th March, 2014 while on duty at Soroti Central Police Station, Olinga lured his victim from the cells and raped her.

He reportedly asked his victim to have sex with him and promised to release her from the cells. Olinga reportedly led his victim to the office of the officer in charge of the station where he raped her in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. Okello says Olinga was caught in action by another cop who was on duty and was consequently apprehended.

He therefore remanded the suspect to Soroti government prison until April 1, 2014 when his case will come up for mention.Joab Wabwire, the Soroti District Police Commanders says the conduct of the cop is scandalous and shameful to the police force.

He regrets the incidents and asks court to give the suspect a deterrent sentence to serve as a lesson to other cops who abuse the powers entrusted to them.
