The nets are distributed as one of the interventions to protect citizens against Malaria; the leading cause of morbidity in Uganda.

However, the arrested individuals destroyed over 50 mosquito nets and used them to make illegal fishing gear popularly known as kokota.

Peter Eriongitai, the criminal investigations officer Kaberamaido Police station, told Red Pepper online  that the culprits were arrested from Morem/Akampala landing site on Lake Kyoga by the beach management police patrol units.

He identified the suspects as Paul Otim, Richard Okwamu, Alwa and Pius Enugu. The others are Sam Otim and Joseph itiemut.

Eriongitai says that police also confiscated six illegal fishing nets which are prohibited because their use depletes fish stocks in the lake.

They were subsequently released on a non cash bond of UGX 150,000 and asked to report back to court on 17th December 2013.

Albert Ejoku the district chairperson Kaberamaido district has warned his voters against abusing and sabotaging the government programs.

Ejoku further pleads with the courts to give such persons deterrent sentences so that others will desist from doing subversive activities.
