Police in Soroti are investigating the death of an inmate in Soroti prison. Michael Odongo, the East Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson identifies the deceased as Tom Obila, a resident of Arabaka village in Arapai sub-county in Soroti district

According to Odongo, Obila was remanded to Soroti Prison following his arrest two weeks ago on charges of being idle and disorderly. He however, says Obila was found dead in his prison cells on Wednesday under unclear circumstances.

He said that they had handed over the body to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem to ascertain the cause of his death. According to Frank Baine, the Uganda Prison Services spokesperson, they are required by law to handover the body of the inmate to police for investigations.

He says they will surrender Obila's body to his family once the investigations to ascertain circumstances surrounding his death are complete. Justine Akamu, an uncle to the deceased expressed disappointment at the death of his nephew, saying he paid Shillings 80,000 demanded by the police to release the deceased in vain.
