Death toll in Thursday Masaka Road accident hits 15 as two bodies remain unclaimed

The number of people who perished in the Thursday morning accident on the Masaka-Mbarara road has raised to 15, following tht death of one other victim who died last night from Masaka Regional Referral Hospital.

Muhamad Nsubuga the Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson, identified the deceased as Lydia Nakabubi. 

Nakabubi is from the same family that lost three members in the accident, which claimed 14 lives on the spot, on Thursday morning. 

This leaves one person as the survivor of the accident; the driver of the truck that rammed into the taxi, who is now undergoing treatment at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital.

According to Nsubuga, police identified 12 out of the 15 people that died in the fatal accident and two bodies remain unclaimed at Masaka city mortuary. 

The deceased include; Sarah Mutusa, 23, Katete Francis, 51, Moses Magero, 49, also known as Deo Kwese,  Ngalambe Francis, 36, Bernard Kisawuzi, Abu-Bakr Mwanje, Ritah Natasha, 18, Mayimuna Nakintu, 21, Shadiya Nakalule, 16, Mayimuna Nankya, 70, and Salimu Ssekandi alias Mugira.

The accident occurred on Thursday morning during a heavy downpour at Kamirampango village, Kasijagirwa along Mbarara by pass in Masaka city when a speeding trailer had a head-on collision with a commuter taxi heading to Kampala from sembabule.    

The trailer was overtaking a bus.
