36 supporters of the National Unity Platform, NUP party have been denied bail and returned to Kitalya until further notice. The group appeared before the General Court Martial on Monday morning, chaired by Lt. Gen. Andrew Gutti.
The group which includes Robert Kyagulanyi’s chief of security Edward Ssebuufu aka Edie Mutwe and singer Buken Ali aka Nubian Li were arrested on December 30th 2020 for engaging in an activity that could lead to the spread of a deadly disease, COVID-19.
However, police later indicated that there were warrants of arrests for some of the suspects in other places including Kampala. The team was then brought to Kampala to answer to charges of being in possession of ammunition.
Last week, 13 members of the group where granted a non-cash bail of Shs. 30 million, bringing the number from 49-36. During their appearance before the Court Martial today, the General court martial declined to release the group on grounds that they will continue to incite violence.
They were instead remanded to Kitalya government prison where they have been for over a month.
Also, the Court chairman Lt. Gen Andrew Gutti ordered the state to expedite investigations and hearing of the case. No date was set for the suspects to be brought back to court.
