Several individuals are in custody at Kyenjojo central police station following violence that marred the eve of and during the Mwenge North parliamentary elections.

According to Kyenjojo District Police Commander – DPC Julius Banganza, several people engaged in electoral violence on Sunday and Monday morning leading to their arrest.

Trouble started on 14th January 2021 when the photo of David Muhumuza the National Resistance Movement - NRM candidate was attached to the name and symbol of independent candidate Politazi Mulimbanyi and the latter’s photo was attached to Muhumuza's name and bus symbol.

Also in the race, were; Innocent Natukunda of the National Unity Platform - NUP party and incumbent and independent candidate, Lawrence Akugizibwe.

The Returning Officer, Daniel Baguma was forced to halt voting following confusion caused by the mix-up in the campaign symbols. The electoral commission set today Monday January 25th 2021 as the day for the voters to elect an MP.

However, it is also reported that at around 10:30 am on Monday, Akugizibwe’s supporters blocked a supporter of Muhumuza at Kifuka trading centre leading to violence.

Akugizibwe's supporters who were travelling in a Tipper Reg. No. UBH 396Q, used it to block an Allex vehicle Reg. No. UBB 410R in which Musinguzi was travelling.

They also smashed his vehicle’s rear-view glass screen with a stone forcing him to park it at Kifuka police post.

Baganza could not mention the exact number of suspects they arrested but said several people are locked up at Kyenjojo Central Police Station on allegations of masterminding the violence.
